Why I love Acupuncture

Why do I love acupuncture? There are many reasons I was attracted to this elegant medicine and the list continues to grow as i continue to deepen my understanding of the medicine.

My first experience with acupuncture was after fracturing an arm in a vespa accident. I was experiencing frequent sharp shooting pain in my right shoulder and neck. This pain lead to me retiring from roller derby ( I am a former Los Angeles derby doll), was preventing me from enjoying surfing and hanging upside down in the aerial silks. I am an adventurer at heart and love to play in nature this pain was not only physical it was also affecting my mood since it prevented me from participating in the activities that brought me joy and stress relief. All of my doctors and therapist had told me that this pain was going to be chronic and I was going to need to learn to live with it. In comes acupuncture. After only three treatments I was pain free and able to return to all of the activities I loved. Acupuncture brought back the joy.

Being a curious individual I immediately began researching this medicine and discovered it was based on bringing the body into alignment with the cycles and rhythm of nature. Being a hiker and surfing aligning and deepening a personal relationship with nature was something that resonated deeply with me. Before I knew it I was spending every wednesday night in a four hour long night class. This was while I was still teaching physical education at an elementary school full-time. As soon as the school year ended I stepped away from my teaching position and was registered as a full time masters student at Emperor’s College of Traditional Oriental medicine.
